Newsmap: Tree View of News Aggregator

Newsmap provides a tool to divide information into quickly recognizable bands which, when presented together, reveal underlying patterns in news reporting across cultures and within news segments in constant change around the globe.

Newsmap is an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator. A treemap visualization algorithm helps display the enormous amount of information gathered by the aggregator. Treemaps are traditionally space-constrained visualizations of information. Newsmap's objective takes that goal a step further and provides a tool to divide information into quickly recognizable bands which, when presented together, reveal underlying patterns in news reporting across cultures and within news segments in constant change around the globe.

This thing is pretty cool and stuff.

Was that too erudite? I thought so.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I agree. This a very cool system, providing a mental map of news, topics and ideas worldwide, or at least according to the Google News service. Very useful to systematize Newsvine seeding and article writing [if you have a pop-up blocker activated you need to allow pop-ups for the site. You are most welcome. What do you think would be the most practical application of this?

You can trace trends this way. See, the media actually influences the public (including members of government) opinion. That means that what is talked about in a large way by the big usa media outlets will be the issue in the minds of people who are making decisions on capitol hill. Meanwhile citizens of the usa will compare what the media has gone on and on about, with the actions of their government, and thereby they'll form their view of politics and their world.
